Preschool

(3-5 years)

The preschool swim lesson program promotes water acclimation and safety. The program is divided into 4 levels in order to support children as they progress.

Pike (Beginner 1) - I am timid or afraid around water. This is my first experience in lessons. I don't like to be separated from my parents.

Eel (Beginner 2) - I am not afraid to get my face wet and I am comfortable in water where I can stand or with someone holding me.

Ray (Advanced Beginner 1) - I love being in the water and can swim with a noodle or other flotation support. I don't mind going underwater.

Starfish (Advanced Beginner) - I can swim with my face in the water and I am beginning to refine my strokes. I enjoy playing above and below the water without flotation.

Youth

(6-12 years)

The purpose of the YMCA Youth Aquatic Program is to help participants lay a strong foundation in swimming technique and safety. This leads children to develop a lifelong appreciation for aquatic activities, which include not only swimming but also life guarding and aquatic sport. In order to facilitate each swimmer's progress the Youth program is divided into levels.

Polliwog (Beginner 1) - I am afraid of the water or have little or no experience in and around the water.

Guppy(Beginner 2) - I am comfortable in water to my shoulders and I'm not afraid of going under water.

Minnow (Intermediate 1) - I can swim the full length of the pool on my front, back and side. I am comfortable in both the shallow and deep end.

Fish (Intermediate 2) - I can swim freestyle with rotary breathing, backstroke, breaststroke and side stroke. I can swim 2 lengths of the pool without stopping.
