Swim Lessons

Learning to Swim at the YMCA

is more than just Stroke Development

One of the keys to the YMCA Swim Lessons program is participants are taught not only swimming skills but also skills that will allow them to enjoy aquatic activities throughout their lives. These include personal safety and survival and rescue skills as well as water sports and games. The program content is based on the concept of developing a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.

The swim lesson program is divided into 4 primary age groups; Parent/Child (6-36 months), Preschool (3-5 years), Youth (6-12 years) and Adult. At each level the program takes into account physical, emotional, social, and motor development, and focus on the most appropriate teaching technique for the age of the student. In addition to grouping children according to age each level is further divided into skills groups so swimmers are working with peers both chronologically and in skills.

The program is expecially attractive to parents because of the way in which students are taught swimming and water safety skills. Instruction is delivered in a student-centered, caring atmosphere by well-trained instructors who give students personalized attention. Safety is a high priority. And the inclusion of information and skill training in other aquatic sports and activities, such as waterpolo; syncronized swimming; and competitive swimming encourages students to develop a lifelong interest in aquatics.

Children like it because they learn those skills that they are ready for. They are able to succeed often, which helps them build self-confidence, and they enjoy learning swimming, water safety, and water sports skills. Most improtant, children in the program have a great time learning how to swim and making new friends.
